In this study, we examined to what extent the quality of lanternfish Benthosema pterotum changes during the transportation at the ambient temperature of the southern coast of Iran. For this purpose, trend of pH, total viable count (TVC), total volatile nitrogen (TVN), peroxide value (PV) and moisture changes were determined within the time intervals of 0, 2, 4, 8. 16 and 24 hours after catching the fishes at 23.6° ± 28°c (ambient temperature). After 24 hours the range of changes in these parameters were: pH 6.83 - 7.54, moisture 72.78 - 77.99 %, TVN 20.2 - 263.2 mg/100 gr, PV 0 - 19.97 mg/kg and TVC 49 - 2 x1.012 cfu/g. The results revealed that the lanternfish must be delivered to the fish meal plants within 8 hours. Within this period of time, the quality of lanternfishes as raw material for fish meal production were acceptable. PH, Moisture, TVN, PV, and TVC of the samples after 8 hours were 6.9 - 7.02, 74.18 - 74.68%, 40.06 - 42.04 mg/100 gr, 3.9 - 4.8 mg/kg and 106 - 107 cfu/g res.....

The sturgeon stocks of the Caspian Sea have been dramatically diminished due to the human activities, which have affected their natural habitat. This report discusses the causes of this problem supported by different physiological, biological and ecological studies as well as stock assessment analyses, mostly carried out in the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The major part of the data in this review have been obtained from a paper presented by A.D. Vlasenko at the International Conference on Sturgeon Biodiversity and Conservation, New York (July 28 - 30, 1994)......

In this study we used Daphnia magna as an index organism for ecotoxicological studies. In order to determine the filtration and ingestion rates in Daphnia magna, we used algea Chlorella volgaris (10 mg/1). Prior to the tests, the acute toxicity of the herbicides Machete and Saturn and the pesticides Diazinon and Malathion, in order to calculate their EC50, were determined. The concentrations which caused the same mortality rate in 24 hours as the EC50 concentrations of these chemical did, were 18.49 mg/1 for Machete, 4.46mg/1 for Saturn, 0.31 gr/1 for Diazinon and 1.5 grit for Malathion. In order to study the toxic effect of Machete, Saturn, Diazinon and Malathion on the filtration and ingestion rates, Daphnia magna was exposed to Ec50, 3/4 Ec50 ,1/2 Ec50 and 1/4 Ec50 concentrations. The rates were reduced after the organism had been exposed to these toxic chemicals for 5 hours. The effective concentrations at which feeding rate were reduced by 50%, compared to the controls, were for h.....

This study deals with pearl oyster fishery in Bandar-e-Moqam and Bandar-e-Nakhiloo in Iran from July to August 1993. The total landings of pearl oyster were 185 tonnes (2.3 million units) with a total marked value of approximately 64 million Rls. Out of the 20000 examined pearl oysters 561 (2.8%) contented pearls, only 14% of which had commercial value (>3mm). Dorso-Ventral Measurment (DVM) of the majority of the caught pearl oysters lays between 70 - 80 mm. It was concluded that there is an exponential relationship between total weight and DVM, while the relationship between the size of oysters and the size of pearls has no significance......

Rutilus frisii kutum, belonging to family Cyprinidae, was reared using mono-culture and poly-culture (combined with Chinese carps) methods. The culturing process were carried out in earthen ponds from 22 May to 23 October in 1992 and 1993. Physical and chemical factors, transparency of the water, sanitary control and growth of the fishes were surveyed monthly. Nitrate and phosphate fertilizer and animal manure (cow and chicken) were applied to facilitate the growth of phytoplanktons and benthoses. Fertilizer usage were regulated according to the results of hydrochemical analyses and the transparency of the water. The fishes were fed on artificial food, concentrated pellet specially made for Rutilus frisii kutum nutrition (KF). Their diet were calculated using the body weight percentage (biomass) as well as their appetite. The essential characteristics of the water including water temperature (15°c - 27.64°c), pH (6.9 - 8.74), dissolved oxygen (4.79 - 7.25 ppm) and trasparancy of the wa.....

The objective of this survey, carried out from March to December 1994, was to study the composition of the fish fauna in Babolrud River, connected to the southern part of the Caspian Sea. The fishes were caught using a electroshocker device from 5 stations allocated to this purpose along the river. The obtained data from this survey indicated that the fish fauna of Babolrud River is comprised of 7 families. Family Cyprinidae with 15 species, including Capoeta capoeta and Carassius auratus, the two dominant species in the river, was the most abundant family compared to the other identified families (Balitoridae, Cobitidae, Gobiidae, Esocidae, Mugilidae and Petromyzontidae) represented only with one species each. The 67% of the fishes in Babolrud River are resident......

In this study the seasonal differences in flesh weight of edible oyster Saccostrea cucullata collected from Bandar Muallem (Northern coast of the Persian Gulf, Bandar Lengeh) were studied from June 1994 to June 1995 (n= 604 individuals). The regression analysis indicated that there is high correlation between mean oyster height (Dorso-Ventral Measurment = DVM) and the flesh weight (r = 0.95). There is also a logaritmic relationship between mean flesh weight and gonadal size of these oysters (r = 0.75). Mean flesh weight of the oysters in spring and summer were higher than in autumn and winter. The canning and the suitable harvest season are also discussed in this paper......

Starred sturgeon is the most commercial sturgeon species in the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea. The condition and the development of its stocks need scientific investigation. During the past few years Mazandaran Fisheries Research Center has tried to study the condition of these stocks to the possible extent. In this paper we have tried to describe and analyze the taxonomy, biology, ecology and different parameters such as catch data, catch per effort, length, age, weight, sexual stages and the caviar in regard to starred sturgeon. The obtained results revealed that starred sturgeon stocks are diminishing......

Chronic and acute effects of stress on the reproductive system and hormonal balance in higher vertebrates is well documented, but the subject is little investigated on fish. Understanding the courses of stress to eliminate or minimize them, will contribute to designing culture systems, or methods, based on the physiological requirements of fish. This will consequently enhance production of cultured fish. This study has investigated the effects of stress as a result of handling and induced spawning through injection of HCG (1100 IU/kg), GnRH (2 Ug/kg), dopamine antagonist (25 mg/kg) and distilled water (0.5 cc/kg). Taking into consideration that the secretion of cortisol is the first response to stress, therefor the level of cortisol in the blood of injected fish (rainbow trout spawners) was compared by using Radio Immuno-Assay technic. In three treatments cortisol level of blood after 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 minutes after stress was measured. The present study showed a significant in.....
